The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Wellness Centre, in collaboration with University Health Services, has rolled out a campus-wide health screening initiative targeting staff across all colleges and units, focusing on early detection of conditions such as high blood sugar, kidney dysfunction, and lipid imbalances.
The ongoing programme, launched during June Wellness Month, has already reached multiple colleges and continues to expand.
The screenings, which began in June, have so far covered staff from the Security Services, School of Medical Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Institute of Distance Learning, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and most recently, the College of Art and Built Environment. The initiative is expected to reach additional colleges and units in the coming weeks.
“This initiative is crucial, especially with the rising concerns around health parameters like kidney function and blood sugar levels,” said one of the attending health professionals. Staff members underwent comprehensive evaluations, including blood pressure and pulse checks, conducted by a team of experienced nurses and laboratory technicians.
Samuel Atibila, Senior Administrative Assistant at the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, emphasized the link between staff wellbeing and institutional productivity.
“There’s a strong connection between staff health and productivity. We must continually engage in health initiatives to support our community,” he said.
The screenings form part of a broader commitment by the Wellness Centre to foster a culture of preventive care and holistic wellbeing across the university. As the programme continues, staff are encouraged to participate actively and prioritize their health.
“We believe that a healthier workforce contributes to a more vibrant and resilient campus,” a spokesperson from the Wellness Centre noted. “Together, we can build a community that values wellness as a foundation for excellence.”
Further health initiatives are expected to be announced in the coming months as part of KNUST’s ongoing commitment to staff welfare and institutional vitality.
